Free Music Source: CLLCT

A while back I mentioned the music website CLLCT as a place I’d have to check out in-depth after downloading an album from there.  I’ve had a look around, but unfortunately haven’t had much of a chance to listen to the artists there since their music player doesn’t seem to cooperate with IE 8, and I haven’t had the chance to look at it at home (where I use Firefox 4, natch).

What I’ve seen of it though is quite positive.  Here’s a description of what CLLCT is about, straight from their website:

CLLCT is a community for lovers of free music. We see music as an art form, not as a commodity. And the wonderful artists of the CLLCT family would rather have their music heard than sold!

CLLCT, however, isn’t simply a community for artists. This is a wonderful place to discover new music and find hidden gems. We have a voting system in place, and releases are recommended to you based on what you vote on. So join the community and make friends with all of these amazing artists before they’re super famous!

I like that it’s a community for both listeners and artists, sort of like Jamendo.  Except I think the emphasis here is less on providing the opportunity to license music (as on Jamendo), as it is an opportunity for artists to develop a fanbase and launch their careers.

The most popular genres on the site seem to mesh with what’s popular amongst most fringe music websites: electronic, experimental, folk, hip-hop, pop, and so on.  Not much of a surprise there.  I’m definitely looking forward to browsing and listening through their collection, because it seems like they have some great young artists in that community.  AND it looks like it’s a very vibrant community, and that’s always a good thing.
