Pretty interesting week, musically. There were a ton of “blogworthy” releases, as The Good, The Bad, and The Unknown put it. But more interestingly for me – mostly because I’m a copyright freak – was a decision by the Copyright Board of Canada to start collecting tariffs for using recorded music at live events. Most everyone that reported on this news item this week highlighted that it means paying royalties for playing songs at a wedding, but this tariff also includes conventions, karaoke bars, ice shows, and fairs. Oh, and parades will also be hit with a $4.39 fee for each float that plays recorded music.
Pretty messed up, eh? More reason to embrace artists who release their tunes under a creative commons license. Here are some blog articles for you to read from this week:
